Mission:
The mission of the School for International Training (SIT) is to prepare students to be interculturally effective leaders, professionals, and citizens. In so doing, SIT fosters a worldwide network of individuals and organizations committed to responsible global citizenship. SIT fulfills this mission with field-based academic study abroad programs for undergraduates and degree and certificate programs for graduates and professionals.
SIT Study Abroad:
SIT Study Abroad offers transformational semester and summer programs that challenge students through SIT’s integration of rigorous academic study and intensive field experience. Each year, more than 2,000 students from over 200 US colleges and universities participate in international programs in over 50 countries, where they select from programs in focus areas including ecology and conservation; culture and development; global health; peace and conflict studies; gender issues; the arts; applied engineering, appropriate technology, and resource management.
World Learning:
SIT Study Abroad is the undergraduate field based academic program of The School for International Training and World Learning, a 75-year-old nonprofit organization that currently operates experiential education and community-driven development programs in 73 countries. Through a network of educator-entrepreneurs over 200,000 people have been awakened to a global perspective and equipped to take action to strengthen communities worldwide.
Experiment in International Living:
World Learning’s founding program, The Experiment in International Living, continues its 75-year mission of fostering international understanding through deeply personal intercultural experiences. The Experiment’s three- to five-week summer programs immerse motivated US high school students in other cultures and languages through family homestays. Participating students engage in travel, language training, community service, peace studies, and ecological projects in more than 25 countries around the world.
SIT Graduate And Professional Programs:
The accredited higher education institution of World Learning, the
School For International Training offers graduate degrees in conflict transformation, international education, social justice in intercultural relations, management, and sustainable development, as well as master’s degrees in teaching French or Spanish in US public schools and teaching English as a second language in US public schools or to speakers of other languages. Programs are based in Brattleboro, Vermont, and include field components around the world. SIT also sponsors short-term continuing education and professional for adults, as well as a series of youth peacebuilding and leadership programs.
World Learning for International Development:
World Learning’s Washington, DC-based international development arm program puts teaching into practice, carrying out projects in 16 countries that promote democratic change and support peace, understanding, and social justice. Community-driven development projects build the capacity of local leaders to strengthen communities across three broad sectors: civil society and social change, education, and training and exchange.
