Milena Flament is a Chilean citizen and Brooklyn resident who was first introduced to world music in her native Santiago thanks to Michael Jackson and Guns ‘N Roses. Her background in the music industry includes interning at Kuarup Discos during her year abroad in Rio de Janeiro and at Cantaloupe Music in Brooklyn, New York. Milena also managed world music at her college’s radio station during her senior year at Middlebury College. Currently, the 23-year old Middlebury alumnus holds the position of New England account manager at Putumayo World Music, the label that revolutionized the genre by successfully marketing it to Americans. Her column will analyze current events, politics, and culture from around the world through the musical perspective.
